AZ8 Spotted In The Wild

The first AZ8 (the next group of Peace Corps Volunteers coming to Azerbaijan in October) has been spotted in the wild, he has a blog called Neither East nor West: Life at the Crossroads. We don't know much about the newest member of our family but I am sure we'll get to know him real well in a couple months.

I had been concerned about the newest group of volunteers since they have not shown themselves online until now. Last year AZ7s started getting invited in February and we had our Facebook Group started in April and by June it was in full swing. However, as the saying goes, it is better to be late than never and I am looking forward to meeting more AZ8s online and providing them with my sage advice.

  1. Hey - this AZ8 lost her compulsive checking of the PC timeline when my invite arrived last Saturday to teach English. Departure Sept.23. Got friends and family to notify here first. Sounds like you're eager for new faces but alas I've got an old face - one who remembers when JFK created the Peace Corps.
My biggest concern: Can I learn the language?
And thanks to whoever for the packing tips.

  2. Hi Peggy,

Glad to meet you. About the language, no worries there. I am terrible at the language some 8/9 months in and I still get around just fine. There are quite a few good English speakers, especially in the larger cities. What I am more concerned for you about is the diet, I see you are a nutritionist, and lets just say the Azeris do not subscribe to the Western World's idea of healthy or anything close to it.

  3. Eli, I'm not sure even I subscribe to the Western World's idea of healthy diet. I'm hoping for local and fresh and not so much! So now I'm really curious about what is a typical diet in Azerbaijan. Maybe I should say instead that I'm a writer.
